LMI Technologies, recognized as one of Canada’s Best Workplaces, is a medium-sized technology company built on a culture of openness, respect and professional excellence. At LMI our staff work passionately toward the common goal of designing and delivering innovative 3D machine vision solutions to OEMs and System Integrators. Our customers benefit from our cost-effective 3D sensor technologies that deliver the best results in even the most challenging 3D inline inspection applications.

We are seeking a Mechanical Product Designer II to join our Opto-Mechanical (SMECH) team. This is not a typical "follow-the-specs" design role. We're looking for a proactive, self-driven engineer who can "think on their feet" and take ownership of projects from concept to production.

The ideal candidate is passionate about precision engineering and data-driven design. You will be a key player in developing our next-generation 3D metrology and sensor products, applying your technical skills to solve complex challenges on tight timelines. If you thrive on analyzing data to validate designs and are motivated by seeing your work come to life, we want to hear from you.

Core Responsibilities

As a peer to another Product Designer II, you will routinely apply your skills to design, develop, test, and deliver on project requirements.

  • Design & Development: Design, develop, and test mechanical and opto-mechanical components and assemblies for our high-performance 3D sensor products.
  • Data-Driven Analysis: Apply statistical analysis (such as Lean Six Sigma concepts) to analyze sensor data from builds. You will use this data to assess design requirement adherence, validate performance, and establish robust specifications for future products.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving: Actively identify and overcome technical obstacles. When timelines are impacted, you will be expected to proactively research, develop, test, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Project Ownership: Manage your project tasks from concept to production. This includes asking insightful questions to clarify requirements, breaking down assignments, and advocating for realistic timelines to maintain work quality.
  • Technical Documentation: Create and maintain all necessary technical documentation, including detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies (SolidWorks), 2D fabrication drawings (GD&T), bill of materials (BOMs), and test reports.
  • Collaboration & Improvement: Actively participate in peer design reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback. You will also contribute to and help implement continuous improvement initiatives within the team.

What You Need to Be Successful (Qualifications)

Must-Have Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly equivalent technical degree.
  • Professional product design experience in a high-technology manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience designing precision components, complex assemblies, or mechatronic systems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) for complex part and assembly modeling.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with statistical analysis for decision-making (e.g., Lean Six Sigma concepts, statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), or analyzing build data to validate designs).
  • A self-driven and passionate mindset: You are a natural problem-solver who takes ownership, asks the right questions, and is motivated to meet goals accurately and on time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across departments.

Bonus Points (Significant Advantages):

  • Direct experience or strong knowledge of 3D metrology, machine vision, robotics, or precision sensor design.
  • Direct experience with opto-mechanical design, precision lens mounting, or the integration of optical components.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (like Python) for data analysis or task automation.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT).
  • Experience with project management software tools to maintain task completion status.

What We Offer
